ARTIST OF THE MONTH: DIANE GRAZETTE-COLLINS

Growing up I was naturally drawn to crayons, paints, construction paper, glue, and pieces of things. I explored museums and art stores. I read books about art, observed other artists, and began taking classes.

Years later I had the good fortune to be, through Dorsey Gallery-- the oldest continuously run Black owned art gallery in New York City--under the guidance of renowned artist Otto Neals. For many years I participated in The Fulton Art Fair.

“I’m playing,” that’s what I tell myself to free myself as I create. Play, discover, see what happens when barriers disappear and imagination roams. I like working with acrylic paint the best. It dries quick and I can paint over it- building layer after layer, leaving traces of my journey, my arrival.

I became interested in creating faces that held a feeling I call “the crossover.” Not a coming-of-age, but navigating the brink of something significant. “Will I make it? Can I do it?” Feel the anticipation, the satisfaction, the resolve, the determination. Imperfect strokes highlight the tension of the in-between, a liminal space — where fear and faith join and the most human part of us is exposed. I want the viewer to recognize themselves in that suspended moment — to see their own wonder, their own crossing mirrored back at them.

In parallel, I am writing Unscapegoated — essays tracing the intentional work of returning to oneself after being cast in a family role.

celebratING our local talents.

Brooklyn-based sound alchemist Almira Ara uses sound waves to create portals for people process, heal, express, and feel. With influences ranging from WILLOW to Tracy Chapman, Jimi Hendrix to Kehlani, genre is nothing but a playground to Almira. *Sound of Boston* has described Almira’s work as “pushing the boundaries of genre, emotional exploration, and their own vulnerability, while creating community in the process,” and this can be seen clearly in their current discography. Through a variety of lyrical content and music styles, Almira Ara proves that they are a Frankenstein of genres, spreading the message of radical emotion like it’s their gospel. The end of 2025 will see the 23 year-old Columbus native releasing one of their most powerful songs, “Little Black Girl”, an encouraging ballad to their inner child and those who’ve experienced some form of Black girlhood. Almira says the following about the piece: “Though I don’t identify as a woman, I did go through Black girlhood, and this song encapsulates everything I wish I could tell my younger self and the inner children of so many around me. I hope this song soothes you like a warm cup of chamomile tea and lights a flame of confidence in you as well.”
